Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter
Book by Bella and Samuel Spewack
Kiss Me Kate
From "Another Op'ning of Another Show" and "It's too Darn Hot" to "Wunderbar" and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" this comic musical
based on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" is a musical gem.
A play within a play unfolds as a theatre company rehearses for a production of "The Taming of the Shrew".
The actors lives are complicated by personal problems in love and money.
Cole Porter came out of a self imposed retirement to create a musical that
would rival "Oklahoma". The style and energy of the music, the lively lyrics and some hilarious scenarios helped this show
earn 5 Tony awards when it opened on Broadway in 1948. Slightly revised in 1999, the updated show won a further 4 Tony Awards
including best Revival of a Musical.
To quote the show itself :
"It's entertaining, vivacious and calculated to please the discriminating theatre-goer"
